As part of my internship with my student newspaper, The Montclarion, as editor-in-chief in the Spring 2025 semester, I published a variety of works, ranging from breaking news to feature to opinion. That work is showcased down below.
"#FOCUS Mental Health: Montclair Unraveled Provides A Tight-Knit Community for Students" was a long-term feature piece I worked on. This article is a profile of a Montclair State University club centered around knitting and crocheting, and how that organization was a space for students to discuss and improve their mental health. I interviewed three students, took and edited photos and did research on the link between the fiber arts and mental health for this piece.
In a similar vein, "#FOCUS Mental Health: Men Need to Support Men" is an op-ed I wrote about mental health. This time, I used research and reasoning to argue that improving men's mental health needs to start with men lifting each other up.
"BREAKING: University Employees File Discrimination Lawsuit Against Montclair State University" is a breaking news piece that Meagan Kane, The Montclarion's news editor, and I worked extensively on. After I had received a tip that the lawsuit was filed, Meagan and I pored over the 40-page document, reached out to the respective parties for comment, and conducted a phone interview with Nancy Erika Smith, the high-profile lawyer for the defendants who battled Roger Ailes in the Fox News sexual harassment lawsuit. Published March 20, 2025, that article has 4,998 page views as of May 5, 2025. On Instagram, the corresponding post has 49,379 views as of May 5, as well as 1,530 likes and 971 shares.
"Montclair State University Considered As Partner Institution for New Jersey City University" is another breaking news piece that I wrote this year. NJ.com originally reported the news that both Kean University and Montclair State were in the running to assist NJCU. I reached out to spokespeople from both NJCU and Montclair State. Published on February 21, 2025, that article has 2,431 page views as if May 5, 2025. On Instagram, the corresponding post has 11,893 views as of May 5, as well as 470 likes and 257 shares.
